Gottfried Helnwein Response

Part 1: The image shows a closeup of a woman's' face and a little man climbing a strand of her hair. I think it is suppose to represent a deeper meaning about people. I believe that this photo is both an artistic and documentary image because the photographer chose to take this picture in this way but also is supposed to represent an idea or concept about people and the way they behave. This image is photoshopped because the man is so small and it is not possible to take this photo. I think that image is suppose to represent the complexity of a person and how difficult it can be to understand someone. It's like the man is working so hard to climb to the top, along her face, because it is difficult to do. This can represent how the way people look might not always depict how they are or what they're feeling on the inside, therefore making it difficult for others to truly understand them. I believe that the photographer was trying to depict the complexity of people's behaviors and the amount of work it takes to truly understand someone. The difference in scale of the man and the girl's face adds a sense of adversity to my interpretation, as if to say that truly getting to know someone fully takes a lot of work and it may be difficult at times but it can be worth it once you've complete know them, or in the case of this image, once you reach the top.

Part 2: The change in viewpoint changes my interpretation because it shows that there most likely wasn't a deeper meaning to the little man on the girl's face. It was simply just taken at the right time. Helnwein's image is of a little girl with dirty blonde, wavy hair and light blue/hazel colored eyed. Her lips are a little dry and her skin is very pale. The large scale of the image could affect the meaning of the picture because it could convey a sense of importance, as if there was something urgent and important to be shared to the viewers. Although there are seam lines down the 1/3s of the image, it seems to be one contiguous picture. There are ripples in the material at the bottom left of the image. The seam lines are most likely there to keep the image flat against the wall with no wrinkles or imperfections. The location looks like an abandoned industrial area. There are broken windows, graffiti on the walls, and old stains from the wear of time. I think that anyone who passes by on a road or in the water will be able to see and they will most likely be locals. It seems that the intended audience is the people who live in that area because it might be a message about something that affects their lives. The mood of the image seems to solemn and melancholic, as if something had been lost. The expression on her face seems sad or like there is something wrong. The title "The Last Girl" suggests that something has happened in her life or community that would result in her being the only one left. It conveys a idea of something lost.
